James Reasoner's Graveyard Shift

Over at Bookgasm Bruce Grossman reviewed some Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine issues of old and mentioned James Reasoner's story "Graveyard Shift". I just want to remind people that it was filmed two or three years back. Check it out:

  1. Thanks for the clip. I read the post over on Bookgasm and somewhere down the line, I can't really remember where, I've seen that film before. Didn't remember it being based on James' story though.

  2. Heavy is the word that comes to mind... Thanks for posting this and thanks to James for a powerful, poignant story.

  3. Yes, it's a very good story, very shocking twist in the end.

I got an idea about this, we'll see if I can develop it further. On a, say, two-year plan, so don't expect anything tomorrow or even next month.

  4. Thanks for posting that, Juri. Patrick Wager did a fine job of adapting the story.

  5. James: you're welcome. I think they did a very good job for an amateur film. (It seems like we discussed this earlier, but was Patrick related to Walter in any way?)

  6. Juri,

We did discuss it, but I don't remember what conclusion we came to, and all those emails were lost with my old computer, including the ones from Patrick Wager. But I have a fuzzy recollection that he's not related to Walter Wager. Don't put money on it, though.

  8. Hi - this is Patrick Wager. I just tried to post, but it didn't seem to go through - may end up being a double post.

I'm not related to the writer Walter Wager, but oddly enough, my father's name IS Walter...

The film was really fun to make - James' story is so good and compact that it translated well. I changed a few minor things (like conflated two cops into one) to make it easier for me. Parts of the film were choppy and couldn't be re-shot because the lead actor was ill - and I didn't feel right asking him to work on it more than what he did. He passed away within a year of making the film.

Glad to see that people liked the film and watched it!
